Citing Online/eBooks in APA Style

When citing online books and eBooks, the publisher location and name are replaced with a web site address.   The web site address should be the home page URL of the digital library or publisher. 

 

E-Books / Online Books

General online book format:

AuthorLastName, FirstInitial. MiddleInitial. (Year of Publication).  Title of book: Subtitle of book.  Retrieved from http://www.onlinelibraryhomepage.xxx

Examples:  

Freud, S. (1913). The Interpretation of Dreams (3rd Edition).  Retrieved from http://books.google.com/books

Weaver, M. (1999). Visual literacy: How to read and use information in graphic form. Retrieved from http://www.netlibrary.com/


Online book with an editor instead of an author: 

EditorLastName, FirstInitial. MiddleInitial.  (Ed.) (Year of Publication).  Title of Book: Subtitle of bookRetrieved from http://www.homepageofonlinelibrary

Example:  

Perkins, K. E. (Ed.) (1990).  Black female playwrights: An anthology of plays before 1950. Retrieved from http://www.netlibrary.com/

Chapter, section, or essay in an edited online book.

AuthorLastName, FirstInitial. MiddleInitial.  (Year of Publication).  Title of chapter or section.  In EditorFirstInitial. MiddleInitial. EditorLastName (Ed.) Title of Book: Subtitle of bookRetrieved from http://www.homepageofonlinelibrary

Example:
