MLA Formatting Basics

  • Margins: Except for page numbers, leave a one inch margin on all sides
  • Font: 12 point readable font (e.g. Times New Roman)
  • Spacing: Double-spacing throughout
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph 0.5" from the left margin.
  • List your name, instructor's name, the course, and today's date in double-spacing, and in the upper left-hand corner of the first page.
  • Center the title in Title Case capitalization (i.e. major words are capitalized, and most minor words are lowercase). Do not underline, italicize, or in quotation marks.
  • Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, follow by a space and the page number. Number all pages consecutively, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. (Always follow your instructor's guidelines)
