Welcome to the CSM Library

Use this guide to support your research for ENGL105 Spring 2020. I'll be working with your class to support your research work on the Alexander essay.

My objectives for the instruction session:

  • Student awareness of specific CSM Library resources that support the assignment
  • Exploration search strategies challenges for this assignment.
  • Critical look at your research habits and assumptions

The Texts and the Assignment

*This is an excerpted and paraphrased from assignment handout  from Fall 2021.

Your task

Write an essay in which you first, characterize how we have entered into the current era of mass incarceration through our nation’s declared War on Drugs and second, (based on your own specific area of interest—pick one focus area so that you do not end up resorting to generalities) analyze and discuss ways we can reform the system in order to be both fairer and more just

Use all of these:

  • The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
  • American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey Into the Business of Punishment.
  • The House I Live In Eugene Jarecki (Documentary Film)
  • At least one of the three podcast episodes - see Canvas website

And

You will need to find one additional source from the CSM Library ebook collections for a total of five (5) sources.
