Plagiarism Versus... from MIT

Plagiarism

Plagiarism, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is " the act of taking the writings of another person and passing them off as one’s own". College of San Mateo has an explicit policy about plagiarism (see link below). Citing and plagiarism are linked. Follow the links below to learn what do you know about plagiarism so far.

Why Cite????

  • to acknowledge the information you used (and did not create yourself)
  • to acknowledge the cited author's expertise (on which you relied writing your essay...),
  • to allow the reader to find the source you are referencing, and
  • to enable her to use the references as a starting point for her own research.

Citing is to research as "assist" is to goal in soccer (or another sport): record is kept (statistics) and rewards follow: recognition and remuneration.
