About the CSM Library Info Lit Tutorial

person using a laptop computerAs part of CSM's Information Competency Graduation Requirement, it's the job of CSM Librarians to introduce ENGL 100 and ENGL 105 students to college-level research. This required research tutorial is designed to introduce CSM students to the research process and using CSM Library resources for research papers and projects. This tutorial consists readings and videos that explain important parts of doing college-level research.

While this tutorial is ungraded, self-guided, and self-paced, all ENGL 100 and ENGL 105 students are required to complete it by the end of the semester to satisfy the Information Competency Graduation Requirement.

College of San Mateo defines Information Competency based on the standards from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Community college students must be information literate learners who can:

  • Evaluate information and its sources critically
  • Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
