Faculty: Instruction

Library Instruction

CSM Library faculty provide customized instructional sessions to support students in CSM courses. Library faculty use the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to inform the design and teaching of instruction sessions, which are typically conducted in the CSM Library classroom and run 50-90 minutes. CSM faculty librarians work with faculty to reach information literacy and instructional goals.

College of San Mateo Librarians can provide information literacy instruction for face-to-face, online, or hybrid classes in either synchronous or asynchronous modalities. Instruction can range from a general introduction to the Library and its services to an instruction session customized to meet a specific assignment, learning outcome, or need.

Examples of librarian-led instructional sessions:

  • Brainstorming session followed by database demo and hands-on working session
  • Finding, evaluating, and using articles or other scholarly content using research databases
  • Evaluation workshop exploring the different ways information is created, shared, and the meaning of authority
  • Discussion of the scholarly conversation, plagiarism, and academic integrity through citation activities and practice
