The Library desires to offer the CSM community access to new and emerging technologies such as 3D printers to inspire a new interest in design, and help the CSM community bring their creations to life. This policy establishes how and under what circumstances community members may use the Library’s 3D printers.
The Library’s 3D printers are available to the public to make three-dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file.
The Library’s 3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes. Community members will not be permitted to use the Library’s 3D printers to create material that is:
Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
In violation of College of San Mateo regulations or the Student Code of Conduct.
Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment.
In violation of another’s intellectual property rights.
For example, the printers will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection. However, an object design or file with a Creative Commons license or that is in the Public Domain may be printed.
The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
3D printing may or may not occur on a first come, first serve basis.
Printer availability, estimated duration of print job, filament color requirements, staff availability, and other considerations will determine print order.
Print jobs by College of San Mateo students, faculty, and staff have priority.
Cost: 3D printing at the Library is currently free. A fee may be charged in the future to cover printing costs.
Items printed from Library 3D printers that are not picked up within 30 days will become property of the Library. Items must be picked up by the individual who printed them. Photo ID or a Peninsula Library System Library Card must be presented when picking up an item.
As our policy explains (see the tab "Policy and Safety", we will print objects in Public Domain or under CC (Creative Commons) licenses.
If your design is a prototype, please note that we cannot guarantee its (file or object) confidentiality. The designs are printed in the public view. We do not use NDAs (Nondisclosure Agreements).
